How I booked Three Business Class tickets to Japan & India for just $150

Introduction

Lets get to the bottom-line. I booked three one-way business class tickets to Japan and on wards to India for a total of $150 (snapshot below of my wife’s CC bill shows three tickets purchased for $48.20 each) while using 70,000 American Airlines miles each way .

Screenshot 2016-01-10 at 2.43.21 PM

$48.20 for each Business class ticket from USA to Japan and onward to India

The tickets usually sell retail at $4000 + each (snapshot below) so this was a great way to redeem miles and simply fly business class on an Amazing Japan Airlines product for just $50 a pop. Guess what at that price my 20 month old son had his own seat!!

JAL Check in

Getting Spoiled at a young age

We thoroughly enjoyed the business class experience from the complimentary lounge access to the amazing food and staff of JAL airlines.

How can anyone do it?

That’s right anyone can do this kind of luxurious travel while paying pennies. I signed up for the AA executive credit card last year when the bonus was 100K AA miles. Citi at that time allowed multiple approval in span of 60 days for the same product and I quickly amassed a huge stash of AA miles (half a million to be precise). I offer free credit card consultation to anyone who is interested in traveling around the world for pennies like we’ve been now doing it for a long time. Feel Free to contact me over the website or by leaving a message below.

Fun In Japan

We stayed at the Hilton Narita Airport Hotel which has a free shuttle pick-up from the Airport every 30 minutes and transfer was very smooth. I used a total of 16000 Hilton points and ~9000 JPY (~$80 USD) total for a two night stay. You can sign-up for the Citi Hilton credit card to earn 60K Hilton points and a free silver status, although I recommend waiting to apply when the sign-up bonus is 80K.

Hilton stay

Zane loving hot dinner at the Hilton Narita after a long flight

We had free breakfast at Hilton due to Diamond Status with Hilton saving us several hundred dollars in meal expenses especially in a city like Tokyo were things can get expensive.

Hilton Bfast

My Hilton Diamond Status gets me free breakfast at Hilton’s worldwide

I booked a 6 hour  private Tokyo city tour  for USD $250 using the website toursbylocals.com and our tour guide Izumi was excellent and very friendly. I charged the $250 on my Capital one venture Credit card and was able to claim all of it as a Travel Credit. Capital One venture card comes with a sign-up bonus of 40,000 Reward points which is good towards $400 in Travel related expenses and you earn 2X points on all purchases.

I am in absolute love with Japanese food and culture. Tokyo s very well connected via the subway system  and its very easy to around. The people are so friendly and humble. We visited the Meiji Shrine, Sensoji Temple and a bunch of shopping district for one-day we were there. Street food is inexpensive and extremely delicious.

 Conclusion

We had an amazing family trip to Japan flying Business class in Japan Airlines and staying at a nice hotel while paying pennies. I’d love to get you started on your travel journey and travel around the world as several of my friends, family and clients have been able to do it. Shoot me an email to get you started for an absolutely free consultation.

Flying to Florida from Richmond for pennies is easier than you think

Florida as we know is  a poplar destination for tourists and it will always cost you serious dough to purchase tickets flying out of Richmond. I will share with you how a family of three can get to  Florida for almost free!!

Allegiant Air is a lesser known American low-cost airline owned by Allegiant Travel Co. that operates scheduled and charter flights. They flight in and out of many popular destination and you can check the entire list here This article focuses on  outbound flights from Richmond. You can also check out their interactive route map here

How to Book?

Allegiant air fly’s out of Richmond to Tampa Bay area (PIE). I put in random dates for travel as you can see in the screenshot below

Screenshot 2015-04-26 at 11.44.31 AM

There are limited option as Allegiant air operates only couple of days a week out of Richmond so to enjoy the savings your schedule has to be flexible. I am able to score departing tickets from RIC to Tampa Bay area (PIE) for $75 and a return from PIE to RIC for only $69. You can play around with the website, punch in different dates and most one way fares are in the range of $60-$90 which is a great deal.

How to book this deal for free?

If your schedule is flexible you can easily get a return ticket from RIC-PIE for approximately $150. However, if you apply for the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and spend $3000 in purchases within the first three months you will earn 40,000 miles sign-up bonus which equates to $400 in travel credit and also the credit card earns 2X miles on purchases everywhere which really helps you earn travel credit that much quicker. Taking in consideration the sign-up bonus of 40,000 miles and the $3000 you will have to spend to earn that bonus your total miles after completing the minimum spending is 46,000 miles (2X earning on $3000) which is $460 in travel credit that can be redeemed for any travel expenses such as airline, hotel etc.

Let’s say you  purchase three return tickets from RIC-PIE at an average cost of $150 per return ticket – your out of pocket total cost will be $450. But if you charge the tickets on Capital One Venture Credit card your total cost will now be $0 as  the earned bonus (46,000 miles of $460 travel credit) can be used to offset  airline expense. The Capital One Venture card also has  several added benefits such as no annual fees the first year (second year $59), no foreign transaction fees, the miles never expire plus 100% free Capital One® Credit Tracker to see your monthly credit score anytime. I think these are some great benefits along with travel rewards this card offers.

Potential drawback of flying Allegiant?

As I mentioned before Allegiant is a low-cost airline. They offer you cheap airfare and if you are a light traveler you will not have to pay anything extra. However, Allegiant will charge you baggage fees and the details are here. But, you can charge the baggage charges  to  Capital One Venture card and later on redeem it for a travel credit essentially not paying anything for it either.\

HOT!!! – 2.5% Cashback on American Express Gift Cards, Citi Prestige and Citi Premier Increased sign up bonus with perks

1. American Express gift cards – Just today Topcashback is offering 2.25% cash back on Amex Business Gift cards. Its great way to make some quick bucks and also earn extra miles and points. I personally used the Chase INK Card to purchase $5000 in gift cards in denomination of $1000 (x5) as Chase offered me  a retention bonus of 10,000 UR points after spending $5000 in three months to offset my $95 annual fees. But you can maximize your earning by using the Barclays Arrival World Elite MasterCard.

Do not use any denominations over $2000 and any promo code as this will not earn any cash back and also avoid using Citi Cards as it could get processed as cash advance. These gift cards can be reloaded onto the Target Prepaidredcard at any Target stores and then you can turn around and payback your credit card or pay other bills.

Amex cash back

The Math on purchasing $5000 in gift cards –

Gift Cards Value – $5000

Purchase fees – $3.95 x 5 = $19.75

Shipping Fees – $8.95

Total Out of Pocket – $5028.7

You will earn 2.25% cashback on $5000 = 112.50

Your net Profit – Cashback – Purchase Fees – Shipping Fees = $83.8

Not bad for 5-10 minutes of my time!!! We are not done yet –

Now if you use the Barclays Arrival World Elite MasterCard you’d earn 2 Arrival miles on a dollar spent so $5000 on gift cards will help you earn 10,000 Arrival miles which equates to $100 in Travel Credit. So now your net earning will be $83.8 + $100 = $183.8. You’re welcome!!

If you don’t have a Topcashback account you can use my referral link to sign-up we both get $10 back after you spend $20 or more.

2. Citi Increased sign up bonus on Prestige and Premier Card can earn you several thousands in Travel Rewards

In the last two weeks, the Citi Prestige and Citi ThankYou Premier have each increased their sign up bonuses to 50,000 ThankYou Points after spending $3,000 in the first three months. One person can apply for both cards and get 100,000 total Thank You points which is to book up to $1350 worth of airfare through the Citi Travel Center.as long as you apply for the two cards at least eight days apart

Questions this article will answer:

  • What are the differences between the Prestige and Premier?
  • Why would you want both?
  • How can you get both?

What are the differences between the Prestige and Premier?

The Prestige is a premium credit card that competes with cards like the American Express Platinum. The Premier is more of a standard rewards card that competes with cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

Sign Up Bonus

Both currently offer 50,000 ThankYou Points after spending $3,000 in the first three months.

Annual Fee

There’s a huge difference here. The Prestige has a $450 annual fee that is not waived. The Premier has no annual fee the first 12 months, then $95 a year.

Category Bonuses

The Prestige offers 3x on airlines and hotels and 2x on dining and entertainment. The Premier‘s category bonuses are slightly better. It offers 3x on travel and gas. That includes airlines and hotels, but also a lot more. It also offers 2x on dining and entertainment.

Ease of Travel

Both cards have chip technology for global acceptance and no foreign transaction fees.

Value of ThankYou Points

Both cards offer the ability to transfer ThankYou Points to 12 airline and hotel programs. This is the highest value redemption method.

Both also offer the chance to redeem points like cash toward any flight with no blackouts, but the Prestige offers higher value when points are used this way. The Premier‘s points are worth 1.25 cents each toward all flights. The Prestige‘s are worth 1.6 cents toward American Airlines or US Airways flights and 1.33 cents toward all other flights.

If you have both the Premier and Prestige, you can combine the points into one account, which allows for redemptions at the better Prestige rates.

You can earn serious travel rewards using benefits from the two cards

And the travel category now includes a wider range of purchases such as:

  • Airfare
  • Cruises
  • Car Rental Agencies
  • Gas Stations
  • Hotels
  • Parking Garages
  • Public Transportation
  • Taxis
  • Tolls

Other Benefits

This is where the Prestige kills the Premier, and why the Prestige‘s $450 annual fee is more than justified in my opinion. The Prestige offers:

  • $250 per CALENDAR YEAR (so $500 before your second annual fee is due) in airfare or airline fee statement credits. Tickets, award taxes, upgrades, and bag fees all qualify. This more than offsets the first annual fee.
  • $100 statement credit for signing up for Global Entry, which also gives access to TSA Precheck.
  • Lounge access to all Admirals Clubs when flying American Airlines or US Airways. Lounge access to all Priority Pass Select lounges always. For either type of lounge, you can bring in all your under-18 children plus spouse or any two guests.
  • Fourth night free on all hotel reservations booked through Prestige’s travel agency.
  • Three free rounds of golf per year at participating courses.

Why Would You Want Both?

Each has strengths beyond its giant 50,000 point sign up bonus.

The Premier has better category bonuses because all the following are included at 3x: airlines, hotels, gas, car rentals, travel agencies, buses, trains, parking, tolls, bridges, and time shares. The Prestige only offers 3x on airlines and hotels. The Premier also has a lower annual fee, and one that is waived for the first year.

The Prestige has far better benefits like the statement credits, airport lounge access, and higher value of points when redeemed like cash for flights. Plus getting the Prestige can retroactively lift the value of ThankYou Points earned on other cards because those points can now be put into your Prestige account, which has higher value redemption options.

If you have one, you might want the other for its strengths. If you have neither, you might want both to maximize the strengths of both.

You can transfer Thank You Points to partner Airlines and easily get to Europe.

How Can You Get Both?

According to the combined experience of FlyerTalkers, you can be approved for no more than one Citi credit card application in 8 days and no more than two applications in 65 days.

So if you got one of the cards months ago and want the other now, apply.

If you have neither, apply for one now and one in 8+ days. (Unless you recently got a different Citi card like the Citi Hilton card with 60,000 HHonors points. In that case, make sure that at least 65 days have elapsed from your previous application to your second application.)

To avoid all confusion:

OK

Got Prestige 8+ days ago, have no other Citi cards, get Premier today

Have neither card or any other Citi card, get Prestige today and Premier in 8+ days

Got Citi Hilton card 14 days ago. Get Prestige today and Premier in 51+ days. (65 day rule noted above)

Not OK

Get Premier and Prestige on same day

Got Citi Hilton card 14 days ago. Get Prestige today and Premier in 8 days

You may not be instantly approved on your applications. When that happens, your screen should have a number to call Citi for an instant decision. I always call in to speed things up. I doubt you’ll be asked why you want both the Prestige and Premier, but if you are, mention the strengths of the one you don’t have yet.

Make sure you apply for the two cards at least eight days apart

Bottom Line

You can get both the Prestige and Premier and long as you apply at least at least 8 days apart, and potentially further apart if you have another recent Citi application. Getting both cards and meeting their minimum spending requirements would earn at least 106,000 ThankYou Points, and probably more if you maximize the category bonuses. If you redeem  through the Citi Travel Center $1350 worth of airfare. You can apply for both these cards at creditcards.com under Travel and Rewards. This is my affiliate link for creditcards.com and I am  thankful if you ever plan to use it.

Free Miles, 60K Citibank Offer, Southwest premier Credit Card 50000points and $100 Statement Credit

1) 250 Free Virgin Atlantic Miles – If you agree to install their shopping portal toolbar “Shops Away”, Virgin will award you 250 miles for doing so. To get this offer, click this link for Shops Away and then click shop today. After logging in and hitting shop now, click Mile Finder up top to see this offer. I would install this in a browser I normally don’t use such as Firefox.

2) 100 Free Aeroplan Miles – Signup to receive emails from Home Hardware and they will give you 100 Aeroplan miles for doing so. This is the frequent flyer program for Air Canada and while 100 miles isn’t a significant amount at all, it is an easy way to reset the expiration date on the miles in your account. Make sure to use a backup email address for this (unless you actually care to receive these newsletters).

3) Citibank 60,000 Hilton HHonors Points Visa – Citibank has temporarily increased the offer on this no annual fee Hilton HHonors credit card from 40,000 to 60,000 for spending $1,000 in 4 months. This card will not be useful for many of you except for those trying to top off their Hilton HHonors balance. I will be picking this card as I need to top off my Hilton balance and also the no-annual fee aspect is appealing although I may cancel this card and re-apply in 18 months to get the sign-up bonus again.

4) Yesterday, I received an email from Southwest with the best offer I’ve ever seen on the personal Southwest card – 50,000 points + $100 statement credit. This offer is targeted however and the link I have for the card pre-populates my information in the application. However it might be possible for anyone to get this offer by phone.

swcc

From my understanding there are several different offers being promoted to Rapid Rewards members including the standard 50,000 point offer on the personal Southwest card as well as a 60,000 point offer on the Southwest Business credit card. In the comments of this post from Doctor of Credit, someone was able to successfully apply for the 60,000 point offer on the business card even though they weren’t targeted as the phone number on the application was a direct line to a department that handed this special offer.

I don’t know if this will work for this offer but the phone number listed on the application is 1-866-836-0917. Applying by phone might work to get the better offer but this is a huge YMMV situation. They might ask for an invitation number in which you try to say you accidentally deleted the email but maybe they can look up the offer for you. Do not apply for the card on the phone unless the rep confirms you are applying for the better offer which includes the statement credit.

I signed up for this card when the offer was increased to 30,000 Starpoints and used it to stay for three nights at Le Meridien, Barcelona. The stay would have costed us upwards of $300 per night for which I used 30,000 Starwood points and $50 out of pocket.

Annual Fee:
$49, waived first year
Value: I value IHG Rewards points at about .7 cents a piece so 70,000 = $490  plus the 10% return on all award bookings would be at a minimum 70,000 from the sign-up bonus, so 7,000 points ($49) and Platinum status ($50) for a total value of about $589. You can maximize the reward stay by reading my article on scoring IHG Hotels worldwide for 5000 points. Via the sign-up bonus you could almost score 14 nights at 5000 points per night via the pointsbreak offer IHG Hotels rolls-out every few months. I would use my anniversary night to stay at IHG Intercontinental Bora Bora Resort
