Capital one

Easiest $600 I ever made and why everyone with a EXCELLENT credit should get this credit card

In my recent post I discussed my latest round of credit card applicationIt was my first ever credit card application with Capital one (would you believe it?) and I was instantaneously approved for their Capital one Spark Cash Business Credit card with a $15,000 limit that I believe is an absolute gem of a card to earn cash back. The current offer on this card is $500 cash back after you finish spending $4500 in three months. Here are some benefits of this card

  • Earn 2% cash back on every purchase, every day
  • Plus, a one-time $500 cash bonus once you spend $4,500 on purchases within the first 3 months
  • Cash rewards don’t expire, and there are no categories to limit where or what you buy
  • $0 intro annual fee for the first year; $59 after that
  • Redeem cash rewards anytime, for any amount, even set up automatic redemption
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Earn unlimited cash rewards that don’t expire

raining-moneyAs soon as I received my card in the mail I headed to Simon mall to purchase necessary gift cards and finish the minimum spending requirement and Hallelujah my bonus of $592.92 posted within 48 hours which is cool as I do not have to wait for my statement to close to receive the cash back bonus. The extra $92.92 on top of the $500 is from the 2% cash back on purchases I’ve made so far on this card. There is no limit to the cash back you can earn using this card.

The redemption process is also nice. Below is a snapshot of what it looks like –

The big bonus from Capital one

cap one redepmtion

The redemption option are plentiful from gift cards to statement credit and more

cap gift card redempt

A lot of gift cards to choose from if that is your preferred choice.

I will be requesting a statement credit for the bonus I have earned so far (no particular reason) just to keep it simple and I have no need for gift cards.

I highly recommend if you have a business or even if you are planning to start a business you could easily qualify for this card (pending EXCELLENT CREDIT i.e typically credit score of 720 or higher). You also do not need an Employee Identification number (EIN) while applying (although it’s better if you have one) and can enter SSN instead of EIN while completing the application. I know some readers got approved for this card by using their SSN. But applying for EIN is free and can be done at the IRS website here. – LINK.

Flying to Florida from Richmond for pennies is easier than you think

Florida as we know is  a poplar destination for tourists and it will always cost you serious dough to purchase tickets flying out of Richmond. I will share with you how a family of three can get to  Florida for almost free!!

Allegiant Air is a lesser known American low-cost airline owned by Allegiant Travel Co. that operates scheduled and charter flights. They flight in and out of many popular destination and you can check the entire list here This article focuses on  outbound flights from Richmond. You can also check out their interactive route map here

How to Book?

Allegiant air fly’s out of Richmond to Tampa Bay area (PIE). I put in random dates for travel as you can see in the screenshot below

Screenshot 2015-04-26 at 11.44.31 AM

There are limited option as Allegiant air operates only couple of days a week out of Richmond so to enjoy the savings your schedule has to be flexible. I am able to score departing tickets from RIC to Tampa Bay area (PIE) for $75 and a return from PIE to RIC for only $69. You can play around with the website, punch in different dates and most one way fares are in the range of $60-$90 which is a great deal.

How to book this deal for free?

If your schedule is flexible you can easily get a return ticket from RIC-PIE for approximately $150. However, if you apply for the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and spend $3000 in purchases within the first three months you will earn 40,000 miles sign-up bonus which equates to $400 in travel credit and also the credit card earns 2X miles on purchases everywhere which really helps you earn travel credit that much quicker. Taking in consideration the sign-up bonus of 40,000 miles and the $3000 you will have to spend to earn that bonus your total miles after completing the minimum spending is 46,000 miles (2X earning on $3000) which is $460 in travel credit that can be redeemed for any travel expenses such as airline, hotel etc.

Let’s say you  purchase three return tickets from RIC-PIE at an average cost of $150 per return ticket – your out of pocket total cost will be $450. But if you charge the tickets on Capital One Venture Credit card your total cost will now be $0 as  the earned bonus (46,000 miles of $460 travel credit) can be used to offset  airline expense. The Capital One Venture card also has  several added benefits such as no annual fees the first year (second year $59), no foreign transaction fees, the miles never expire plus 100% free Capital One® Credit Tracker to see your monthly credit score anytime. I think these are some great benefits along with travel rewards this card offers.

Potential drawback of flying Allegiant?

As I mentioned before Allegiant is a low-cost airline. They offer you cheap airfare and if you are a light traveler you will not have to pay anything extra. However, Allegiant will charge you baggage fees and the details are here. But, you can charge the baggage charges  to  Capital One Venture card and later on redeem it for a travel credit essentially not paying anything for it either.\

Have you started your mileage run for 2015?

[Disclosure: I do  earn referral for some of the credit cards in this post. Thanks for the support if you ever apply through the site.  To find other top deals check out the top credit card offers or you can also check offer at creditcards.com.]

January is coming to a close and I hope you have started your mileage run for 2015 or your first App-O-Rama. If you have not there are still some limited time offer you can capitalize on such as the US Airways Premier World Mastercard. I am not sure how long this card will be around but it is a quick and easy 50,000 miles for a $89 annual fees (not waived) and no minimum spending (which is great!!) and there have been reports via flyertalk of getting this card more than once (I got denied after applying for my second card and received a letter stating I already have enough open credit with them so the trick could be calling Barclays before applying for the second US Airways card and reducing your line of credit). I applied for the below three cards for myself and one for my wife. Below are the results –

Credit Card, Account or Spend Miles or Points Type Cost / Minimum Spend
Club Carlson Premier Rewards Visa Signature Card

85,000

Club Carlson Points 50,000 points after first purchase and 35,000 after spending $2500 in first 90 days, $75 annual fees
American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card

50,000 X 2

Amex Reward Points $1000 spend in 3 months, annual fee waived 1st year. This was a limited time offer. Current offer is for 25,000 points
US Airways Premier World Mastercard

50,000

US Air/AA Miles I got denied as this was my second card and did not get lucky as some others have reported

I will pay $75 in annual fees for first year and earn 100,000 Amex membership points (can be transferred to other partners) and 85,000 Club Carlson points which can be used up to nine night stay at some properties and utilizing several promotions such as second night free for stay of two nights or more for holders of Club Carlson Premier Rewards Credit Card

Strategy for a couple  to stay  5 days in a Top Hotel and fly for almost free to any destination ?

Here is a simple strategy using credit card sign-up and some limited time offers that a couple can utilize and travel for almost free to most destinations in US, Caribbean, Mexico.

Credit Card, Account or Spend Miles or Points Type Cost / Minimum Spend
US Airways Premier World Mastercard X 2 (one each for hubby and wifey)

100,000

US Air/AA Miles $89 X 2 Annual Fees Not waived, but its like getting 4 domestic roundtrip -US tickets for less than $200 and no minimum spending
Chase INK  Business Plus

50,000

Ultimate Rewards Points $5000 spending in three months, Points can be transferred to Hyatt and other hotels to get some real good value
Capital One Ventures Rewards Credit Card

44,000 points

Travel Credit of $440 $3000 spend in 3 months, annual fee waived 1st year. Can be used towards any expenses such as rental cars, check-in bags and hotel taxes and tariff
Citi Hilton Reserve Card

2 Free weekend Nights at some classy Hiltons worldwide and free Gold status

Hilton Hhonors $95 Annual fees not waived. Gold status at Hilton is great value as it gets you free breakfast, upgrades and lot more!! $2500 in purchases within first 4 months
Total – 5 Credit cards between 2 people 150,000 Miles and Points , $440 Travel credit and 2 nights at Hilton  $295 Annual fees out of pocket for first year for some fabulous travel

I think its a great value you are getting (4 domestic tickets, 5-7 night stays and $440 travel credit) in the first year even after paying $295 in annual fees. Just a word of caution that Capital one does a credit check on all three bureaus unlike other credit card issuers who typically just check one. You may also consider the Barclay Arrival World Elite Master Card which also gives you $440 in travel credits and is one of my favorite cards out there and that is the reason I am keeping it  for the second year.

I am offering FREE Travel coaching to help you plan your next trip. This will typically be done via skype/phone call for a 30 minute consultation. Feel free to drop me a line I’d love to hear from you.
